Summary
Netway Networks, a national managed service provider with offices in Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, delivers IT and cloud solutions for a wide range of clients across Australia. As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, Netway recognised the need to enhance their clients’ protection against phishing, malware, and email-borne attacks. After extensive experience with various solutions, Netway chose Avanan – recommended by Manage Protect – for its seamless deployment, deep M365 integration and best-in-class detection capabilities.
According to Senior IT Engineer Damian Hammett, Avanan has become Netway’s preferred email security solution.
“It’s my preferred one out of everything I’ve used – it just works.”
Business Challenge
Netway Networks supports a large and diverse client base, many of whom rely on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace for business communications. With the increasing sophistication of phishing and ransomware threats, traditional gateway filtering is no longer sufficient.
Maintaining a strong client experience was crucial and email security needed to function effectively in the background without creating friction for end users or Netway’s support team.
Solution
Through Manage Protect, Netway adopted Avanan for Microsoft 365 clients. The solution was chosen for its advanced capabilities, ease of deployment, and intuitive management.
Key reasons for choosing Avanan included:
- Cloud-native integration: Direct API integration with Microsoft 365 and Gmail, without the need for MX record changes.
- Click-time protection: Every link is scanned dynamically in a sandbox when clicked, blocking delayed phishing attacks.
- Advanced attachment scanning: Even password-protected files are safely scanned before delivery.
- Multi-tenant partner portal: Enables Netway to manage all clients from one place with easy navigation and real-time visibility.
- User-friendly interface: Simple for both engineers and helpdesk staff to release quarantined messages or manage user reports.
To make customer provisioning even easier, Damian developed Netway’s own configuration template, pre-loading Avanan policies and rules to streamline new client setups. “It saves going through and filling out 30 checkboxes,” he explained. “We just apply our Netway template and it’s ready to go.”
Result
Avanan supports Netway Networks in several ways. Onboarding new clients takes minutes rather than hours, thanks to simplified configuration and automated policy templates. Helpdesk teams experience fewer escalations, as quarantined or suspicious emails can be quickly identified and managed through streamlined workflows.
The system has also proven highly reliable: there have been no known cases of malware or phishing successfully bypassing Avanan’s defences. Damian noted, “Out of all the mail filtering products I’ve used, [Avanan] is the most user-friendly from an admin standpoint.”
False positives are rare and typically caused by sender misconfiguration rather than Avanan errors. Netway’s clients appreciate that the system “just works” – a hallmark of effective cybersecurity.
Future Directions
Netway continues to migrate clients to Avanan’s Advanced plan, offering a higher level of protection as standard. The company is also exploring optional add-ons such as DMARC enforcement and archive and compliance features.
With support from Manage Protect’s responsive local team, Netway is confident that Avanan will remain central to its managed cybersecurity offering.
“Every client we’ve offered it to has taken it up. It’s easy to set up and simple to manage.”
